The number of people injured in the deadly shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, has risen to 15, as police intensify efforts to track down those responsible for the attack.

Twelve people were killed when unknown gunmen opened fire at the informal settlement on Tuesday night in one of the deadliest incidents of gun violence recorded in the area in recent years.

While no arrests have been made, police say investigators are following several promising leads and remain confident that a breakthrough is imminent.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni confirmed that 15 people had been admitted to hospital following the shooting.

“As we processed the crime scene and also visited the hospital, we ended up with a number of 15 people injured,” Mthombeni said.

He added that detectives are working around the clock to identify and apprehend the suspects.

“We have leads, and we are hopeful that we will have a breakthrough soon,” he said.

According to Mthombeni, investigators have already obtained statements from several survivors of the attack and are reviewing CCTV footage as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police have not yet established a motive for the shooting, but authorities are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

The mass shooting has sparked renewed concerns about violent crime in Gauteng, with community leaders and residents calling for swift arrests and increased police visibility in the area.
