An investigation is underway into the cause of a major power outage that left thousands of residents and businesses across northern Durban without electricity on Sunday evening.

According to eThekwini Municipality, the outage affected areas stretching from Durban North to Tongaat, plunging communities into darkness for approximately three hours.

The municipality said the disruption originated at the Ottawa Substation, resulting in the loss of around 300 megawatts of electricity supply across the Northern Network.

Preliminary findings indicate that both incoming Eskom power feeds to the network were lost, while multiple trips were also recorded at the substation, contributing to the widespread outage.

Electricity has since been restored to all affected areas, but municipal teams are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the failure.

The City said all available resources have been mobilised to address a communications fault linked to the incident and to ensure services are fully restored as quickly as possible.

eThekwini Municipality has apologised to residents and businesses for the inconvenience caused and assured the public that updates on the ongoing investigation, as well as the restoration of the emergency hotline, will be communicated through its official platforms.

Officials have urged residents to remain patient while technical teams complete their assessments and implement any necessary corrective measures.
