The Limpopo Department of Transport has announced a temporary closure of the N1 between Witvlag junction and the Hendrik Verwoerd Tunnel to facilitate the recovery of a bus involved in a fatal crash.
The route will be closed from 08:00 on Thursday morning for approximately four hours. The decision follows an accident on Wednesday in which a bus veered off the road and plunged into a ditch, leaving one person dead.
Department spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said recovery efforts were delayed due to adverse weather conditions, which made it unsafe to remove the wreckage earlier.
He explained that the bus, which was travelling from Zimbabwe, could not be recovered immediately because of its heavy load and persistent rainfall in the area.
Authorities have since arranged to offload the goods from the vehicle before proceeding with recovery operations.
Motorists travelling between Makhado and Musina have been urged to plan ahead and expect delays during the closure period.
