Dobsonville rape-accused Tshepo Nzimande has abandoned his bail application during his appearance at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The 58-year-old, a clergyman and local politician, is accused of raping a 12-year-old girl over the Easter weekend. The case has drawn widespread public outrage, particularly after a video allegedly depicting the aftermath of the incident circulated on social media.
Protesters gathered outside the court, calling for Nzimande to be denied bail.
Residents say ongoing electricity challenges in the area since last year led many children to frequent Nzimande’s home, where he reportedly offered access to Wi-Fi and other amenities. A neighbour who responded to the child’s screams said it was common for children in the community to spend extended periods at the residence.
Nzimande was arrested following the circulation of the video.
The African National Congress (ANC), of which he is a member, has since distanced itself from him.
A representative speaking on behalf of the victim’s family, who requested anonymity, welcomed the decision to abandon the bail bid and expressed confidence in the justice system.
“We understand that he is a priest, and we are trying to come to terms with what could have led to this,” the representative said.
The case has been postponed to 20 May for further investigation.
