A six-year-old girl was shot and wounded in the head after being caught in crossfire between rival gangs in Valhalla Park on the Cape Flats on Thursday morning.
Police say the child was rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment following the incident.
According to the Wesley Twigg, officers arrived at the scene and found the young victim with a gunshot wound to her head. The attackers had already fled and have not yet been arrested.
“Upon arrival on the scene, they found a six-year-old girl who sustained a gunshot wound to her head. The victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment. According to reports, the child was caught in the crossfire when rival gangs started shooting,” Twigg said.
Police confirmed that detectives from Bishop Lavis SAPS are investigating a case of attempted murder, while all available leads are being pursued in an effort to apprehend those responsible.
Authorities say the shooting forms part of ongoing gang-related violence in the area, which continues to place residents particularly children at risk.
