A police captain accused of defrauding the South African Police Service (SAPS) Protection Security Services of millions of rand has been granted R50,000 bail.
Johannes van Rensburg appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where he faces charges of fraud and theft.
The 53-year-old was arrested by SAPS’ anti-corruption unit following an internal investigation into suspicious financial transactions within the division.
Police allege that van Rensburg manipulated the financial system by authorising cash withdrawals under the pretext of travel expenses for officers assigned to presidential protection services. However, investigators say the funds were never paid to the officers and were instead withdrawn in lump sums by the accused.
The case has been postponed for further proceedings as investigations continue.
