Police have not yet confirmed the number of fatalities following a collision between two vehicles on the N1 near Modimolle in Limpopo.

Initial reports suggest that up to five people may have been killed in the crash, which occurred on Wednesday morning. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and to verify the number of casualties.

Provincial Transport Department spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said emergency services were dispatched to the scene.

“There’s been a serious accident on the N1 between Mookgopong Y-press and a high accident zone towards Modimolle. Two vehicles have collided. The northbound lane is temporarily closed, and traffic is being diverted to the southbound lane to maintain flow,” Mabata said.

He added that emergency medical services, the South African Police Service, and traffic officials are on site, urging motorists to exercise caution and consider alternative routes.

The incident comes amid increased traffic volumes in Limpopo during the Easter travel period, a time when the province typically records a rise in road accidents as motorists travel to various destinations.
