Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says government is confident that load shedding will soon be eliminated, citing sustained technical interventions and improved system performance.

Ramokgopa made the remarks in the National Assembly on Tuesday during the adoption of the 2026 Fiscal Framework and Revenue Proposals.

He said the current suspension of rolling power cuts reflects the success of measures implemented to stabilise the country’s electricity supply. According to the minister, these interventions are driven by scientific analysis and engineering expertise rather than short-term political considerations.

Ramokgopa emphasised that technical competence within the energy sector has been central to progress, adding that engineers are continuing to work towards permanently resolving power shortages.

Meanwhile, power utility Eskom reported signs of financial recovery, supported by government debt relief aimed at stabilising its balance sheet.

Chief Financial Officer Calib Cassim said the utility’s debt levels have declined significantly following state intervention. He noted that an upcoming tranche of funding is expected to further strengthen Eskom’s financial position as it enters the new financial year.

Despite the improving outlook, Eskom cautioned that escalating municipal debt remains a major concern and could undermine long-term sustainability if not addressed.

Government has maintained that stabilising Eskom’s finances and operational performance is key to ensuring a reliable electricity supply and ultimately ending load shedding in South Africa.
