Six people arrested in connection with a R10-million insurance scam in Limpopo appeared in court on Wednesday.

The suspects, detained on Tuesday during a joint police operation, face a total of 47 charges, including nine counts of murder. The case has been postponed to 25 March to allow for further investigations and possible bail applications. All six will remain in custody until then.

These latest arrests bring the total number of suspects linked to the syndicate to ten, several of whom are believed to be members of the same family. The investigation also involves former police officer Rachel Kutumela and three others.

Authorities allege that victims were insured and subsequently murdered so the perpetrators could claim the insurance payouts. The crimes are reported to have occurred over more than two decades, from 2000 to 2024, with the insured individuals dying under various circumstances.
