Two security guards were shot and wounded during a cash-in-transit robbery near the NPC Cement factory, prompting the temporary closure of a major stretch of the N2 southbound on Wednesday morning.
Eyewitnesses said the robbery unfolded dramatically between the M7 and Higginson Highway, with loud explosions and multiple gunshots ringing out as suspects targeted a cash vehicle.
Emergency responders confirmed that one of the guards sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the second guard suffered moderate to severe injuries and was stabilised at the scene before being transported to hospital by ambulance.
“The N2 south is closed and will remain closed for quite some time. The crime scene has been sealed off by police for further investigation,” Jamieson said.
Residents and motorists reported hearing blasts followed by sustained gunfire during the incident. Videos circulating on social media appear to show armed suspects surrounding a white cash van, while another clip shows smoke billowing from the vehicle.
Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the area as police conduct investigations and clear the scene. The heist adds to ongoing concerns over violent cash-in-transit robberies on South African roads, where rush hour can quickly turn into a crime scene.
