The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has launched an investigation into alleged examination irregularities at Zwelinjani Secondary School in eNqabeni, Pinetown, following concerns over withheld matric results.
Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi confirmed that some learners and parents have raised objections after several results were not released, prompting an official probe.
Mahlambi said the investigation began at the marking centre and involves teams from both the provincial and national education offices to ensure a thorough review of the matter.
Affected learners have been informed, while officials assess the scope of the reported irregularities.
“There were cases that were reported, but it will not involve many learners from one school. It would be one here and two there, and all those cases are being dealt with,” Mahlambi said.
He added that the situation at Zwelinjani has drawn heightened attention because several learners are involved at the same school, whereas most irregularities typically occur in isolated cases across different institutions.
According to the department, the number of reported incidents declined in 2025, but all flagged cases are still being addressed in line with examination regulations.
The department said it remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the examination process while ensuring that affected learners receive clarity and support as investigations continue.
