A manhunt has been launched for a life-sentenced inmate who escaped from a correctional facility in Pietermaritzburg.
The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that Thulani Gcaleka escaped from Sevontein Correctional Centre on Thursday while assigned to a cleaning team working at the prison’s farm.
According to a preliminary report, Gcaleka fled during the work detail. Authorities have since mobilised efforts to track him down.
Gcaleka is serving a life sentence for several serious offences, including attempted murder, rape, robbery and housebreaking.
The department has initiated an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape and has warned that any security lapses or failures to follow procedure will be dealt with firmly.
Department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the findings of the probe would determine further action.
“The outcome of the investigation will guide the necessary disciplinary action and corrective measures to be undertaken in line with the Correctional Services Act. The re-arrest of the escapee remains a priority,” Nxumalo said.
Members of the public who may have information on Gcaleka’s whereabouts are urged to contact their nearest police station.
Authorities say efforts to locate and apprehend the inmate are ongoing.
