Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has confirmed he will not contest the party’s upcoming leadership election, formally stepping out of the race ahead of its Federal Congress in April.

Steenhuisen, who also serves as Minister of Agriculture, made the announcement on Wednesday in Durban, the city where he began his political career three decades ago.

Addressing the media, he opened by thanking those who have supported him throughout his time in public office before reflecting on what he described as key milestones achieved under his leadership. These included guiding the DA’s participation in the Government of National Unity, restoring the party’s outright control of the Western Cape, and expanding its national footprint by promoting younger leaders into senior roles.

Steenhuisen said he believes he has fulfilled the objectives he set for himself when he took the helm of the party.

“This is not the end of the road for the DA, and it is not the end of the road for me. I now have another mission,” he said.

He indicated that his focus for the remainder of the term would shift fully to his responsibilities as Agriculture Minister, particularly efforts to curb the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.

“My next chapter is to eradicate this disease from our shores. It has been the honour of a lifetime to lead the party. For three elective conferences, we have done some great things, and today I simply say, mission accomplished,” he added.

The DA is expected to elect a new leader at its Federal Congress in April.
