The case against several members of the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit (AGU), accused of serious crimes including murder, assault, kidnapping, torture and defeating the ends of justice, has been postponed to 5 March.
The officers were arrested in connection with the death of alleged gangster Wade Price, as well as the alleged kidnapping and assault of several of his associates in December last year.
Their legal representatives are expected to approach the Western Cape High Court on Friday to challenge a magistrate’s decision in the matter.
The State has previously opposed their release on bail, arguing that no exceptional circumstances exist and that granting bail would not be in the interests of justice.
Tensions ran high outside the court during proceedings, with supporters of the accused officers and Price’s family clashing. Police were deployed to separate the groups and maintain order.
Sandra Price, the widow of Wade Price, said she and her teenage daughter were still struggling to cope with the loss.
“They killed my husband, and on my birthday. The people who are meant to protect us are the ones who took his life. Why should they get bail?” she said.
The matter is set to return to court next month as legal proceedings continue.
