Four suspects wanted for a string of violent crimes, including kidnapping, were killed during a shootout with police south of Durban on Thursday afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal police say the men were believed to be part of a gang accused of terrorising communities in and around Umbumbulu.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said officers had acted on intelligence about the group and tracked down a vehicle matching the description of one allegedly used in recent crimes. The vehicle was spotted in Adam’s Mission, within the KwaMakhutha policing precinct.

The suspects were wanted in connection with several serious offences, including armed robberies, house robberies and carjackings.

Police followed the vehicle to Sheleni Road, where officers attempted to intercept the suspects. A confrontation ensued, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

“Police caught up with the suspects on Sheleni Road and during the confrontation, a shootout ensued. After the shootout, four suspects were found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds,” said Netshiunda.

One suspect managed to flee the scene, and a manhunt has been launched to locate and arrest him.

No police officers were injured during the incident.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
