Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo says investigators have found no evidence of money being exchanged between former police minister Bheki Cele and alleged cartel figure Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Khumalo was testifying before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating criminality within the country’s justice system when he responded to a question from African National Congress MP Khusela Diko on whether Cele had received funds from Matlala.
Khumalo told the committee that while investigations have uncovered financial transactions involving Matlala and several other individuals, no such link has been established with the former minister.
“In terms of our investigation, we have not picked that part,” Khumalo said. “We have identified many people who interacted with Mr Matlala through the exchange of money, but we have not picked up anything with regard to the former minister of police. Even in cases where money is exchanged physically in cash, we follow those activities, and so far, nothing has emerged.”
The Ad Hoc Committee continues to probe allegations of criminal influence and corruption within the justice system.
