The Democratic Alliance (DA) has filed a criminal complaint against Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane, accusing her of misleading Parliament over the appointment process to the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) boards.

Speaking outside a Cape Town police station, DA Federal Chairperson Helen Zille claimed that Nkabane falsely stated that an independent panel of experts had overseen the appointment of SETA board members. However, Zille revealed that six of the so-called “independent” experts were, in fact, employees within the minister’s department.

She further alleged that several appointees were ANC loyalists, raising concerns about political interference in what was meant to be a transparent and merit-based process.

While Minister Nkabane has since withdrawn the selection list, Zille accused her of “misleading and lying” to Parliament.

Zille also took aim at President Cyril Ramaphosa, accusing him of inconsistency in holding officials accountable.

“The President had no problem firing the DA’s Andrew Whitfield over an unauthorised overseas trip. But when it comes to corruption and misconduct within his own ranks, he turns a blind eye,” said Zille.

She criticised what she described as double standards in the government’s approach to discipline and accountability.

“Ramaphosa refuses to act against criminality in Parliament. Those actions go unchecked, while minor infractions are met with swift consequences,” she added.

Minister Nkabane had not responded to media queries by the time of publication. Her response will be included once received.
