The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms across parts of the country, including Gauteng, as intense weather conditions continue to sweep through various provinces.
Forecaster Lehlogonolo Thobela says the storms may bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail, and frequent lightning, with additional yellow level 2 warnings issued for areas in KwaZulu-Natal, North West, Northern Cape, and the Free State.
“In Gauteng’s southern regions, we’re expecting a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms, while northern parts of the province remain under a level 2 warning. Localised flooding is possible due to heavy downpours, and there's a high risk of lightning strikes and strong winds,” said Thobela.
In Tshwane, Emergency Services are urging residents to exercise caution. Spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni warned against venturing outdoors during storms, particularly avoiding metal structures and water bodies that could attract lightning.
“Stay indoors if possible. Avoid fishing or playing golf during thunderstorms. These activities increase the risk of lightning injuries,” Mnguni advised.
Meanwhile, in KwaZulu-Natal, residents are bracing for a cold front bringing cloudy skies and scattered thunderstorms throughout the day and into the evening.
“We expect rainfall across the province today, with a significant 60% chance of showers in the western regions, particularly Uthukela and Amajuba Districts,” said SAWS forecaster Wiseman Dlamini.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to follow updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
