Residents of Umkomaas, on the south coast, are reeling in shock following the fatal shooting of a couple on Friday night. According to reports, unknown assailants opened fire on the pair while they were traveling in their vehicle near Valley View and Crowder Main Roads.
The victims, identified as tuckshop owners, were reportedly on their way to collect stock for their store when they were attacked. KwaZulu-Natal police have stated that the motive for the shooting remains unknown at this stage.
However, Ward 99 Councillor Jane Naidoo has suggested that the murders may be linked to a construction enterprise. She noted that the male victim was involved in the local Water Scheme Project, a significant infrastructure development in the area.
“Ngwadini is currently an important area as the dam forms part of an extension of the Lower Umkomaas Water Scheme Project. This project is a key phase of the uMngeni initiative, which is currently under construction,” Naidoo explained.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
