Cape Town police have arrested two suspects on the N1 highway after discovering a consignment of mandrax tablets worth an estimated R1.5 million.

According to police spokesperson Joseph Witbooi, members of the Flying Squad were on patrol when they noticed a driver behaving recklessly. Upon spotting the officers, the driver attempted to speed away, prompting a pursuit.

“The police forced the vehicle to a stop near the Sable Road exit. The occupants became restless but were quickly brought under control,” said Witbooi.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R1.5 million. Two men, aged 40 and 37, were arrested for drug possession.

The suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.
