The African National Congress (ANC) is considering whether to disband its Provincial Executive Committees (PECs) in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng following their poor performance in the last general elections.
The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) had previously summoned leaders from both provinces in November to account for their electoral losses. Over the past weekend, the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) convened in Boksburg to deliberate on the NWC’s findings and decide on the future of the provincial structures.
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri emphasized that the NEC must take a balanced approach in determining whether to dissolve or reinforce the PECs. She noted that multiple factors were being considered, including the political landscape, organizational strength, and the functionality of branches in both provinces.
"The situation in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng differs politically and organizationally. We do not have a report indicating that disbandments have consistently led to negative outcomes. Similarly, there is no evidence suggesting that reinforcements have resulted in either positive or negative trends. So, we have to be very balanced in our approach," Bhengu-Motsiri stated.
The final decision on the fate of the provincial leadership structures is expected to be announced following further discussions within the ANC's top leadership.
