The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has called for an extraordinary summit on the 16th of this month to address the escalating violence in Mozambique. The country has been experiencing intense post-election protests, leading to widespread unrest and the suspension of operations at the Lebombo port of entry at the South Africa-Mozambique border.

Business owners in Komatipoort, which lies near the border, have expressed concern over financial losses due to the closure of the border post. Opposition parties in Mozambique have rejected the results of last month’s elections, further fueling tensions.

In response to the unrest, Mpumalanga Community Safety and Security MEC Jackie Macie has assured the public that additional security measures are in place. Macie confirmed the deployment of a multi-disciplinary task team, which is working around the clock along the N4 toll road to ensure the safety of trucks and other road users heading to the Lebombo Border Post.

“We have already deployed our multi-disciplinary task team here at the borderline and along the N4 road. It is a 24-hour deployment that we have carried out already. So I can assure the truck drivers and all our road users on the N4 line from Komatipoort coming to Lebombo Border Post that their safety is guaranteed,” Macie said.
