KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has directed MECs to swiftly arrange a meeting with the construction industry to tackle the ongoing issue of construction mafia groups. These groups, often linked to business forums, have reportedly been intimidating contractors at various construction sites, demanding a share of the work.

The Public Works Department revealed last year that such interference has cost the government approximately R3 billion since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing the issue on the final day of the provincial cabinet lekgotla in Mayville, Ntuli emphasized the need for dialogue with these groups.

"We need to determine where the government may be falling short and where the construction industry may be lacking," Ntuli said. "Our goal is to address these issues collaboratively to achieve positive outcomes."

Ntuli warned that there would be consequences if the meetings do not lead to a resolution and if the disruptive activities persist.
