The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is maintaining its lead in KwaZulu-Natal as the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) continues counting votes following this week's local government elections.
With 67% of voting districts in the province fully counted, preliminary results indicate that the party is also making gains in three local municipalities.
The latest figures suggest that the MK Party is leading in Richmond, Impendle and Johannes Phumani Phungula local municipalities.
Results displayed on the IEC's dashboard show the party ahead in the provincial vote, followed by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA).
MK Party provincial spokesperson Mkhuseli Mlengane says the party believes voters have supported it because of its commitment to bringing change.
“We know that one of the reasons that made them vote for the uMkhonto weSizwe Party is because they believe that we can bring the change they need. We promise and commit that we will do our best to deliver,” Mlengane said.
The IEC is expected to provide further updates on Friday afternoon as the remaining votes are counted and election results are verified.
