A widespread electricity outage in Ekurhuleni has disrupted water supply from Rand Water's Mapleton Pumping Station, affecting at least six municipalities.

The affected areas include Lesedi, Govan Mbeki, Victor Khanye and Thembisile Hani municipalities, as well as the Ekurhuleni and Tshwane metropolitan municipalities.

Rand Water says its Boksburg pumping station has been unable to operate since the power interruption was reported on Monday.

The bulk water supplier says a faulty electricity breaker has yet to be repaired, preventing the restoration of power and the resumption of water pumping operations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Rand Water expressed concern over the delay, saying it had made repeated enquiries with the City of Ekurhuleni throughout the night but had not received confirmation of when electricity would be restored.

The utility added that it had no control over the restoration of the city's electricity supply and had not been provided with an estimated time for repairs.

Water supply to the affected municipalities remains disrupted until electricity is restored and pumping operations can resume.
