A man has sustained multiple injuries after being struck by a train and trapped beneath it for several hours in Canelands, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday night.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram says reaction officers arrived at the scene at approximately 10:56pm and found the man still breathing beneath the train.
Fire and rescue personnel worked to free the man before he was transported to hospital for further medical treatment.
Balram says the train crew, who were reportedly transporting tourists, told officers that the driver had spotted the man sitting on the tracks as the train approached.
The driver allegedly sounded the horn repeatedly in an attempt to warn him, but the man did not move.
The train was unable to stop in time due to the short distance, and the crew later discovered the man trapped beneath it.
The victim reportedly sustained multiple injuries, including suspected fractures to his leg, shoulder and other parts of his body.
Balram says the man's full condition could not be assessed while he remained trapped beneath the train.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been confirmed.
