The South African Council of Churches has warned that vulnerable communities face growing risks from extreme weather, as storms continue to damage homes and threaten livelihoods.

The warning comes as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) meets in Johannesburg to prepare for the 2026/27 El Niño season.

The council says strengthening climate resilience is essential to protecting lives, supporting affected communities and safeguarding food security across the region.

Damage sustained at the historic Regina Mundi Church highlights how even long-established community institutions are vulnerable to the effects of severe weather.

With El Niño expected to influence weather patterns during the upcoming season, concerns are mounting over the potential impact on communities already struggling with the consequences of extreme weather events.

The council warns that the effects could extend beyond property damage, with possible loss of life and worsening food insecurity among the risks facing vulnerable households.

As regional preparations continue, questions remain about whether communities have sufficient information, resources and support to respond effectively to future disasters.
