Police have uncovered a suspected multi-million-rand drug manufacturing laboratory at a farm in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg.

The operation was conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence unit at the National Head Office, together with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations, also known as the Hawks.

Five South African nationals were arrested at the premises on Thursday morning.

Police say quantities of Mandrax and ecstasy tablets were discovered at the suspected laboratory.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says senior SAPS officers were travelling to the scene to conduct further assessments and investigations.

“Police have discovered quantities of Mandrax and ecstasy tablets at the suspected drug manufacturing laboratory. Five South African nationals who were found at the premises have been arrested,” Mathe said.

The operation comes a day after police uncovered what is believed to be another multi-million-rand Mandrax manufacturing laboratory during a raid at Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West.

Police have not yet provided further details about the estimated value of the drugs or the full extent of the manufacturing operation.

Investigations into the Krugersdorp discovery are continuing.
