South African music legend Babsy Mlangeni has died at the age of 83.
Mlangeni enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades, using his music to capture the experiences of South Africans through songs about love, life and the social realities of the times in which he lived.
His best-known songs include Bua Nnete, Sala Emma Botsotso and Umadlembathini, which became part of the soundtrack for generations of South Africans.
Blind since childhood, Mlangeni found his voice through music and went on to establish himself as a respected guitarist, composer, songwriter and singer.
His contribution to the country's music industry earned him several honours throughout his career.
In 2017, Mlangeni received a South African Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award.
He was honoured again in 2025 when he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Arts and Culture Awards.
Mlangeni's death marks the loss of one of South Africa's enduring musical voices, whose work continued to resonate across generations.
