The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall across parts of southern KwaZulu-Natal.
The warning is in effect from Thursday through Friday, with forecasters cautioning residents about possible localised flooding and reduced visibility on the roads.
SAWS forecaster Ayanda Nsele says the southern parts of the province have an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms, while northern KZN has a 60% chance of rain.
Areas expected to be affected include eThekwini, uMgungundlovu, Harry Gwala and Ugu, as well as parts of the iLembe District Municipality.
Nsele says the expected rainfall could cause flooding in vulnerable areas and make driving conditions hazardous.
“Due to the disruptive rain, we are expecting localised flooding. We are also expecting low visibility on the roads,” she says.
The warning follows heavy rain and hail that affected parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday afternoon.
Several roads in the eThekwini Municipality were waterlogged or flooded, while some residents reported damage to their properties.
Parts of southern Durban also experienced power outages, although electricity was later restored.
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says provincial teams are continuing to monitor conditions.
He says teams from Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Human Settlements will remain on alert despite expectations of improved weather.
Sibiya says roads across the province remain open following Tuesday’s severe weather, with no fatalities reported.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution, reduce their speed and remain alert for flooded roads and poor visibility.
