Police have confirmed that the fourth body of a woman found in the Kempton Park area, east of Johannesburg, has been identified as that of missing runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo.
The 38-year-old was reported missing last week after leaving her home for a run.
Her family went to the scene on Sunday night after a woman’s body was discovered in a ditch. However, they could not immediately confirm whether the body was Moselakgomo’s due to the extent of the injuries sustained.
Police have since confirmed that the body was that of Moselakgomo.
The latest development comes as concern grows over a series of deaths involving women in the Kempton Park area.
A fifth woman’s body was discovered in the area on Monday, bringing the total number of bodies found in the vicinity to five.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths and have not confirmed whether the cases are connected.
Authorities have also raised concerns about online dating scams in the area, which they say may be linked to cases involving robbery and, in some instances, assault.
Senior police officers have visited the area as investigations continue into the deaths of women whose bodies have been discovered over the past two months.
The South African Police Service is expected to intensify its investigations and establish whether there are any links between the cases.
