Five suspects, including two women, are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court in Cape Town on Monday following the alleged kidnapping and rape of a 25-year-old e-hailing driver.
The suspects were arrested after police rescued the man, who was allegedly held for ransom in Heathfield over the weekend.
Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala says the suspects contacted the victim’s family and demanded R4,000 for his release.
Gwala says the victim’s brother alerted police after receiving the ransom demand.
Police then used the victim’s vehicle tracking system to locate him at Southampton Road in Heathfield, where he was rescued.
According to police, the victim had met one of the female suspects through his e-hailing business the previous week.
The two allegedly exchanged contact details and remained in communication before arranging to meet.
Police allege that when the driver arrived for the meeting, he was kidnapped by the group.
Gwala says the two female suspects allegedly raped the victim while he was being held captive.
The five suspects are expected to face charges of kidnapping and rape when they appear in court.
