Police in the Western Cape have seized drugs worth an estimated R5.85 million during an operation on the N1 near Beaufort West.

The operation was conducted on Thursday night by several police units, who stopped and searched a vehicle travelling along the highway.

Officers discovered 57,000 Mandrax tablets and 5kg of cocaine concealed inside the vehicle.

The 46-year-old driver was arrested and is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Police say the seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the transportation and distribution of illegal drugs across the province.

Authorities have vowed to continue targeting criminal networks involved in the movement of narcotics in the Western Cape.
