The eThekwini Municipality says it is stepping up law enforcement operations across the city, with eight unlawful structures demolished and four foreign nationals arrested during recent interventions.
Metro Police have been conducting operations targeting drug dealing, theft, illegal structures and breaches of municipal by-laws.
Eight illegally erected structures were demolished in Umlazi and Clairwood, south of Durban.
Four foreign nationals were also arrested after they allegedly failed to produce valid documentation authorising them to remain in South Africa. The suspects were detained at the Montclair police station, according to municipal spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila.
Drugs worth R56,000 seized
The municipality says Metro Police also carried out three separate drug-related operations last week, including an operation at a local school.
Mzila says the operations resulted in drugs worth approximately R56,000 being removed from the streets, with arrests made in Phoenix, Chatsworth and along the N2.
In a separate incident, two men were arrested in Pinetown for allegedly attempting to steal diesel.
Metro Police also conducted a search operation at a school in Pinetown in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the K-9 unit.
The operation focused on removing drugs and weapons from school premises and helping to improve safety for learners and staff.
“The City remains committed to enforcing the rule of law and improving the safety of our residents,” Mzila said.
The municipality says similar enforcement operations will continue across eThekwini as it works to address crime, illegal activities and by-law violations.
