The African National Congress (ANC) is set to convene a special meeting in Johannesburg on Tuesday as the party moves to finalise its mayoral candidates ahead of the November local government elections.
The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is expected to consider and approve the party’s preferred candidates, with the process likely to be concluded before the end of the week.
According to the governing party, Tuesday’s meeting will mark the final stage of its candidate selection process as it prepares for the upcoming municipal elections.
The ANC has faced pressure over delays in announcing its mayoral candidates as its election campaign gathers momentum.
The party changed course on Saturday after initially indicating that it would unveil its mayoral candidates. Instead, it presented the top three candidates shortlisted for each municipality.
The NEC’s decision this week is expected to provide clarity on who will represent the ANC in key municipalities when voters head to the polls in November.
The process comes as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s party seeks to strengthen its election campaign and finalise its leadership teams ahead of the local government elections.
