National Coloured Congress (NCC) Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams has begun giving evidence before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.

Adams is being questioned about his alleged involvement in an investigation into seven senior Crime Intelligence officials, including the unit’s former head, Dumisani Khumalo.

The NCC MP previously submitted an affidavit alleging corruption and the misuse of secret service funds by the officials. His affidavit subsequently led to investigations by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), which are now being examined by the commission.

During his testimony, Adams was questioned about his failure to respond to emails sent to him by the commission.

Adams explained that he had seen an email containing three questions but expected further questions before responding. He also cited ongoing problems with his parliamentary laptop.

“What I said was, I observed an email asking three questions, however I expected more questions, therefore I did not respond to it,” Adams told the commission.

He said he had experienced numerous problems with the laptop and suggested that Parliament’s IT personnel could be called to verify his claims.

“Although this is not an excuse, I’m just trying to explain to you the situation I was in, I’m still in with this laptop,” he said.

Adams’ testimony is expected to shed further light on the allegations that prompted the IDAC investigations and the circumstances surrounding his affidavit.
