An interschool rugby match in Cape Town was brought to an early end over the weekend after the referee allegedly heard the use of a racial slur during the game.
The match between Fairmont High School and Settlers High School was stopped by the referee following the alleged use of the K-word.
Footage of the incident has since circulated widely on social media. In the video, the referee can be heard describing the alleged conduct as unacceptable before calling for the match to be abandoned.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed that the incident is being investigated.
WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said both schools were addressing the matter through the appropriate procedures.
“The matter is currently under investigation. The WCED will provide any necessary support to those involved, including counselling services where required,” Hammond said.
She added that both schools had been asked to follow the relevant processes while the investigation is under way.
“We respectfully request that the schools be afforded the opportunity to conduct their investigations, without interference or disruption,” she said.
Hammond said available video footage was also being reviewed as part of the investigation.
The department has not yet provided further details on the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident or indicated whether any disciplinary action will be taken.
