An aircraft is expected to be deployed on Monday morning to assist firefighting teams battling a vegetation fire near Kloof Nek Corner along Tafelberg Road in Cape Town.
The fire broke out on Sunday, prompting South African National Parks (SANParks) rangers and traffic officials to respond to the scene. Officials assisted with the safe evacuation of visitors while also managing traffic in the area.
Firefighting crews remained on the scene as efforts continued to contain the blaze.
The fire has since moved closer to the Lower Cableway Station. However, no visitors have been affected as the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is currently closed for its annual maintenance period.
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Managing Director Wahida Parker said staff remained on high alert throughout the incident and praised the emergency services for their support.
She said the team was “very well supported” by the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, SANParks’ volunteer firefighting teams and fire management officials.
Parker also commended Cableway staff for their response, saying they had done an “incredible” job managing the property during the emergency.
Authorities are continuing efforts to contain the fire, with aerial support expected to assist ground crews on Monday.
