Police are appealing to the public for information following a deadly home invasion in Woodlands, Pietermaritzburg, that left a 33-year-old mother and her one-year-old daughter dead.
The incident happened four days ago when armed suspects allegedly broke into the family’s home while they were sleeping and opened fire.
The woman and her baby daughter were killed at the scene, while the woman’s 14-year-old son sustained serious gunshot wounds. He is currently recovering in hospital and is being supported by relatives.
The motive for the attack remains unknown, and police have yet to make any arrests.
Ward 32 councillor Garth Middleton said the incident had left the community deeply shaken.
Middleton confirmed that the teenager was recovering in hospital and urged anyone who may have information about the shooting to contact Mountain Rise SAPS.
“I have full faith in Mountain Rise SAPS that they will do whatever is possible to bring this perpetrator and any other perpetrator who even thinks of doing this GBV crime,” he said.
He also called on residents to assist investigators in ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
“Please, let’s contact Mountain Rise SAPS and let’s make sure that this killer gets the full might of the law. That is what we want as a community,” Middleton said.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and are appealing to anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward.
