A 27-year-old man has appeared in the Ndwedwe District Court in connection with the attempted murder of MK Party Ilembe District Secretary Zanele Mbhamali and her husband.
Velile Ntshangase, of Mahlabathini, was arrested by the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) and faces two counts of attempted murder.
The case was postponed to 3 August to allow Ntshangase to obtain legal representation.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the charges stem from a shooting that took place on the night of 23 June 2026.
"It is alleged that Ms Mbhamali and her husband were travelling home along Road P100 towards Ndwedwe at approximately 10:30pm when unknown suspects opened fire on their vehicle," SAPS said in a statement.
The KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team took over the investigation after receiving the case docket on 10 July and immediately launched investigations.
Police said the probe led to Ntshangase's arrest.
Investigators have also linked a second suspect to the attempted murder. However, police said the individual was shot and killed by unknown assailants at his home on 29 June after returning from work.
Investigations into the attempted murder remain ongoing.
