President Cyril Ramaphosa has accepted the resignation of Independent Directorate Against Corruption (Idac) head Advocate Andrea Johnson with immediate effect.
Johnson requested over the weekend to be released from her duties immediately, bringing an end to her tenure at the helm of the anti-corruption unit.
According to the Presidency, the President's decision followed a recommendation by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi, which was supported by National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Andy Mothibi.
Johnson formally submitted her request for an immediate departure to both the NDPP and President Ramaphosa.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Presidency expressed gratitude for Johnson's contribution to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and her leadership of Idac.
"President Ramaphosa thanks Advocate Johnson for her years of service to the National Prosecuting Authority and as head of the Independent Directorate Against Corruption," the statement read.
The Presidency also reaffirmed government's commitment to supporting the country's prosecuting authority in its efforts to combat crime and corruption.
"The President assures the leadership and staff of the NPA of government's unwavering support for its work in the fight against crime and corruption," the Presidency said.
Johnson's departure comes amid heightened public attention surrounding her recent testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and ongoing scrutiny over the operations of Idac.
