Members of the March and March Movement have called for justice for a Durban woman who was allegedly stabbed by her partner, as the accused is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.
The victim, Nomzamo Mbhele, was allegedly stabbed multiple times last week in southern Durban. She remains in a serious condition in hospital, according to her family.
The accused was scheduled to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday, but the proceedings were postponed after it emerged that he is receiving medical treatment.
Supporters of the March and March Movement staged a picket outside the court, demanding justice for Mbhele and calling for greater protection for women and members of the organisation.
The movement has alleged that the attack was linked to Mbhele's involvement with March and March, claiming that several of its members have been subjected to threats in recent months.
March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma said the organisation had repeatedly reported these threats to authorities but alleged that little action had been taken.
"It is deeply painful to see any woman suffer at the hands of a man. We are especially concerned when the violence is allegedly connected to the work of our movement. We have raised concerns about threats against our members, but we believe those warnings have not been taken seriously," she said.
The case has been postponed to Tuesday, when the accused is expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate's Court for the first time.
Police investigations into the alleged stabbing are continuing.
