Security has been significantly increased at the Bridget Mabandla College precinct in Pretoria ahead of the scheduled appearance of alleged criminal cartel figure Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala before the Madlanga Commission.
Matlala is currently being held at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre, where he has remained in custody since his arrest in May last year. He is facing separate charges relating to attempted murder, as well as fraud and corruption.
During his appearance, Matlala is expected to testify on matters including a multi-million-rand South African Police Service (SAPS) tender and allegations surrounding the unlawful installation of blue lights on his private vehicles. The blue lights were allegedly fitted through the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department.
Madlanga Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that security measures around the venue have been strengthened, resulting in restricted public access to the proceedings.
Michaels urged members of the public to follow the commission's proceedings via the official live-streaming platforms instead of attending in person.
