More than 70 suspects have been arrested during the latest operation targeting illegal mining activities in Gauteng, as law enforcement agencies continue to intensify efforts to combat illicit mining across the province.

The joint operation, involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), was carried out at Bundu Inn in Mohlakeng.

During the raid, police confiscated two vehicles, more than 20 generators and over 100 bags containing suspected gold-bearing material believed to be linked to illegal mining operations.

Authorities said the operation is still ongoing, with officers continuing to search the area and process suspects.

Police have warned that the number of arrests and the quantity of recovered items are expected to increase as the operation progresses and further investigations are conducted.

The crackdown forms part of broader efforts by law enforcement agencies to dismantle illegal mining networks and curb related criminal activities in Gauteng.
