Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that he will step down from his role, bringing an end to his tenure in charge of the South African men's national football team.

The 74-year-old Belgian announced his decision in an interview with Belgian publication Voetbalnieuws, confirming that his time with Bafana Bafana has come to an end.

Broos leaves as the longest-serving head coach in the history of the national team, having taken charge in June 2021.

During his five-year spell, he guided South Africa through one of its most successful periods in recent history. His achievements included leading Bafana Bafana to the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time and securing qualification for two consecutive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.

He also oversaw South Africa's third-place finish at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where Bafana Bafana claimed the bronze medal after an impressive campaign.

Broos' departure comes at a crucial time, with AFCON qualifying fixtures on the horizon, placing pressure on the South African Football Association (SAFA) to appoint a successor ahead of the next international window.

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has previously indicated that former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane would be his preferred choice to take over the national team should the position become vacant.

SAFA has yet to announce who will replace Broos as head coach.
