The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced the recall of selected SPAR yoghurt products after a production fault was found during the manufacturing process, warning consumers not to consume the affected items.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commission said the recall was initiated after SPAR identified a machine malfunction that may have compromised the quality and safety of certain yoghurt products.
NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba said the recall affects the following products:
- SPAR Fat Free Yoghurt
- SPAR Low Fat Yoghurt
- SPAR Double Cream Yoghurt
- SPAR Indulge Double Cream Yoghurt
- SPAR Active Drinking Yoghurt
The affected products have a sell-by date of 9 August 2026 and a use-by date of 12 August 2026. They were distributed to SPAR stores across South Africa from 15 June 2026.
According to the NCC, the recall follows a machine malfunction during production that may cause the yoghurt containers to swell or "blow", resulting in changes to the product's taste, smell and appearance.
"The recall is due to a machine malfunction during production, resulting in product blowing. This may cause changes in the product's taste, smell and appearance," Ntaba said.
The Commission warned that consuming the affected yoghurt could lead to stomach discomfort and urged customers to avoid eating any of the recalled products.
Consumers who have purchased the affected yoghurt are advised to return it to their nearest SPAR store, where they will receive either a full refund or an exchange.
"They are advised to return the products to their nearest SPAR store for a full refund or exchange," Ntaba said.
The NCC has encouraged consumers to respond promptly to product recalls, stressing that they play an important role in protecting public health and consumer safety.
