Authorities have traced a relative of the man who died in last week's devastating shack fire in Redhill, north of Durban, as efforts continue to assist dozens of residents displaced by the blaze.
The fire swept through the Malacca Road informal settlement on Friday, destroying at least 60 shacks and leaving 81 people homeless.
Officials had spent several days trying to locate the deceased man's next of kin before successfully tracing a family member.
Ward councillor Mandla Biyela said the identification was made possible through information provided by residents of the informal settlement.
"They said the guy comes from Manguza, next to the border, but he has relatives in Stanger. They informed the family, so we are waiting for them, then we go forward," Biyela said.
He added that it may still take some time before the deceased's body is formally claimed by his family.
Meanwhile, authorities continue to provide assistance to the 81 residents affected by the fire as recovery efforts remain underway.
The cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed.
