Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi is among four people arrested during an overnight operation conducted by the Commissions Recommendations Task Team (CRTT).
The coordinated operation targeted individuals allegedly linked to corruption involving the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
According to information available, those arrested include both current and former municipal employees.
Police have also instructed former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi to report to her nearest police station in connection with the investigation.
Mkhwanazi is already facing separate criminal proceedings and is currently out on R30,000 bail.
In that matter, he and Ekurhuleni Municipal Manager Kagiso Lerutla have been charged with fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
The latest arrests form part of the CRTT's ongoing efforts to investigate and act on allegations of corruption and misconduct arising from various commissions of inquiry.
Police are expected to provide further details on the arrests and the charges facing the suspects as the investigation progresses.
