The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) says it will be on high alert ahead of planned anti-illegal immigration marches and gatherings expected to take place in Soweto on Monday.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the demonstrations are classified as spontaneous gatherings after no formal applications were submitted to the relevant authorities.

Despite the lack of official notification, Fihla said law enforcement officers will be deployed across key areas to monitor the situation, maintain public order and minimise disruptions to traffic.

Motorists have been advised to avoid routes around Zondi and the Jabulani Amphitheatre, where road closures, heavy traffic and delays are anticipated.

Fihla warned that authorities will take a zero-tolerance approach to any unlawful conduct during the demonstrations.

"Lawlessness, vandalism or illegal barricading of public roads will not be tolerated. Those taking part are urged to conduct themselves peacefully and within the framework of the law," he said.

He also appealed to motorists to plan ahead and make use of alternative routes where possible.

"Please anticipate delays, a heavy law enforcement presence and the potential for localised diversions around Zondi, Jabulani and surrounding arterial routes. If possible, plan your trips early or use alternative routes to avoid frustration," Fihla added.

The planned gatherings form part of a series of demonstrations calling for stronger action against undocumented migrants, with police maintaining that they are prepared to ensure public safety while protecting the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
