Grammy Award-winning South African singer Tyla is making her mark on the big screen, lending her voice to the latest instalment of the beloved Toy Story franchise.

The musician voices an inflatable flamingo character in Toy Story 5, bringing what she describes as her own South African flair to the animated film.

Speaking about the opportunity, Tyla said acting has always been one of her passions.

"I love acting, I love movies, I love animation, I've always been interested in film," she said.

The latest chapter in the Pixar franchise explores the challenges toys face in an increasingly digital world, as they compete for children's attention against modern technology.

"It's a different generation, it's a different time, tech is definitely everywhere for kids," Tyla said, reflecting on the film's central theme.

The movie has already enjoyed a record-breaking start at the box office, delivering the franchise's strongest opening weekend to date. It grossed more than R2 billion in North America over the Father's Day weekend, making it the biggest opening of the year so far.

The sequel reunites fan-favourite characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the toy gang as they fight for relevance in a world increasingly dominated by screens and gadgets, including a tablet that poses a new challenge to their survival.

For Tyla, the role marks another milestone in a career that continues to expand beyond music and onto the global entertainment stage.
